How to Create Visualizations
Learn how to create and configure visualizations — including bar charts, line charts, KPI cards, and tables — from your datasets to use as building blocks for dashboards.
Visualizations transform your dataset results into visual formats like bar charts, line charts, doughnut charts, KPI cards, and more. They are the building blocks for dashboards.
Open Your Dataset
- Navigate to the Warehouse in the left sidebar
- Open the dataset you want to visualize
Expand the Preview Pane
- Look at the bottom of the dataset editor
- Expand the Preview Pane
- You should see your dataset results in table format
Create a New Visualization
- Click the + Create Visualization tab on the right side of the preview pane
- Assign a unique name to your visualization
Select the Visualization Type
Choose from the available types:
| Type | Best For | Variants |
|---|---|---|
| Bar chart | Comparing categories | Vertical, horizontal, stacked, grouped |
| Line chart | Trends over time | With gradient area fill |
| Pie chart | Proportions of a whole | Standard |
| Doughnut chart | Proportions with context | Center space for labels |
| Gauge chart | Progress toward a target | Half-circle with value/max and description |
| Table | Detailed tabular data | Sortable, filterable, formatted headers, row numbers |
| KPI card (Column Metric) | Key single metrics | Large number with prefix/suffix, goal, delta indicators |
Configure the Parameters
- Select X/Y axis columns
- Choose aggregation functions (sum, count, average, etc.)
- Configure series grouping to break data into categories
- Customize colors
- For bar charts: choose stacked vs grouped mode
Table-Specific Configuration
- Set header background and font colors
- Toggle row numbers on or off
- Configure column formatting
KPI Card Configuration
- Set prefix (e.g., "$") and suffix (e.g., "%")
- Choose currency format and decimal places
- Set a goal value (static number or from a column)
- Choose a delta indicator (arrow or percentage showing change)
Save the Visualization
- Submit your configuration
- The visualization appears as a permanent tab within the preview pane
- You can view results visually alongside the raw table data
Next Steps
Once created, visualizations can be added to Dashboards as widgets. See the How to Create Dashboards article.
